Open a Traditional Bank Account in Portugal

Historically, opening a bank account in Portugal required a visit to a physical branch. While this remains the norm for many banks, the process is generally uncomplicated once you have the paperwork ready.

Required Documents:

  • Valid passport or national identification card
  • Proof of Portuguese address (utility bill, rental agreement)
  • Portuguese Tax Identification Number (NIF)
  • Evidence of income (payslip, pension statement)

Initial Deposit:

Most banks mandate a minimum initial deposit, which can fluctuate. It is advisable to inquire about this before visiting the branch.

Traditional Process:

  • Select a bank: Portugal boasts several established banks such as Banco Santander, Caixa Geral de Depósitos, and Banco BPI. Consider factors like branch accessibility, fees, and available services.
  • Gather documents: Ensure you have all necessary paperwork prepared, including your NIF.
  • Visit a branch: Scheduling an appointment can help minimize waiting times.
  • Complete forms: You will need to fill out account opening forms.
  • Provide biometric information: This often entails fingerprint scanning.
  • Activate your card: You will likely receive a debit card upon account opening.

Opening an Online Bank Account in Portugal

The emergence of digital banking has introduced convenience to account opening. Some Portuguese banks now offer online account creation, and EU-wide EMIs like Monvenience remove the NIF requirement from the equation entirely.

Required Documents for Online:

For traditional Portuguese online banks, similar to in-branch accounts, you will need identification, proof of address, a NIF, and often proof of income. For a Monvenience EU IBAN account, only a passport and proof of address from your home country are required.

Online Process:

  • Choose your account type: A Portuguese-domiciled digital account, or an EU-wide IBAN account like Monvenience.
  • Create an online account: Follow the provider's digital application procedure.
  • Verify identity: This may involve video calls or document uploads.
  • Activate your account: Once approved, you can begin using your account.

The Advantages of an EU IBAN Account

While establishing a local Portuguese bank account is feasible, considering an EU-wide IBAN account offers distinct benefits.

  • Portability: An IBAN account can be used seamlessly throughout the EU, facilitating efficient cross-border transactions.
  • Currency Exchange: Multi-currency sub-accounts allow for holding multiple currencies, thereby avoiding some conversion fees.
  • Online Accessibility: IBAN accounts come equipped with robust online and mobile banking platforms.
  • No NIF or Fiscal Representative Needed to Apply: Unlike a Portuguese bank account, a Monvenience EU IBAN sidesteps the NIF and fiscal representation requirements described below.

Portugal, as a member of the Eurozone, is an ideal location to use an EU IBAN account.

Portugal: A Haven for Residents and Businesses

Portugal has implemented policies to attract residents and businesses, though several have changed in recent years and are worth checking carefully rather than assuming older information still applies.

  • Tax Regimes: The former Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) regime closed to new applicants from 1 January 2024. It has been replaced by the narrower Tax Incentive for Scientific Research and Innovation (IFICI), aimed at qualifying professionals in specific fields - check current eligibility before assuming a favourable regime applies to your situation.
  • Golden Visa Program: Real estate investment was removed as a qualifying route in October 2023; the programme continues via investment funds, business creation, and other eligible routes, each requiring careful due diligence.
  • Quality of Life: Portugal's pleasant climate, relatively affordable cost of living, and rich cultural heritage make it an appealing place to reside.

Challenges of Banking in Portugal as a Non-Resident or Business - and How We Solve Them

Portuguese banking has a few well-documented friction points for anyone without a long-standing local footprint. Here's what to expect, and how a Monvenience LT IBAN and USD account are built to work around each one.

1. The NIF and fiscal representative bottleneck

Most Portuguese banks require a NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) to open an account. EU/EEA citizens can get one for free at a Finanças office once in Portugal. Non-EU/EEA nationals applying remotely typically need to appoint a fiscal representative resident in Portugal before the NIF is issued - commonly arranged through a lawyer or an online service, at a cost that runs from roughly EUR 70 to several hundred euros depending on the provider and whether ongoing representation is included.

Mitigation: Monvenience's EU IBAN account does not require a NIF or a fiscal representative to apply - only a passport and proof of address from your home country. You can open an account first and sort out a NIF later if you need one for property, employment, or other Portugal-specific matters.

2. IBAN discrimination

As in other EU countries, some Portuguese companies, landlords, or utilities incorrectly refuse a non-Portuguese IBAN, even though this is illegal under Article 9 of the SEPA Regulation (EU) No 260/2012, which requires any SEPA-zone IBAN, including a Monvenience LT IBAN, to be treated the same as a local PT IBAN for euro payments.

Mitigation: if a counterparty refuses your IBAN, cite Article 9 in writing, and escalate through the "Accept My IBAN" initiative or Portugal's national competent authority if it isn't resolved.

3. Foreign account reporting duties for Portuguese tax residents

If you become a Portuguese tax resident, you are required to list the IBAN and BIC/SWIFT code of any foreign deposit or securities account in Table 11 (Quadro 11) of Anexo J on your annual Modelo 3 return - even if the account earned no interest during the year. The Portuguese tax authority (AT) receives account data automatically from many countries via the Common Reporting Standard, and omissions can trigger fines. This is general information, not tax advice - please confirm your exact obligations with a Portuguese contabilista certificado.

Mitigation: keep your annual Monvenience account statements on hand each filing season (1 April to 30 June); listing an account with a zero balance or no interest costs nothing beyond the paperwork.

4. Needing more than euros

Freelancers and businesses serving clients outside the EU often find a euro-only IBAN isn't enough on its own, forcing them to juggle multiple providers to collect USD or GBP payments.

Mitigation: pair your EU IBAN with a dedicated Monvenience USD account on the same platform - see below.
